Torawaka grew up around firearms—his father leads the Satake Rifle Squad, a mercenary unit, so gun training was basically part of the family business. He's particularly skilled with flintlock rifles and came to Ninjutsu Academy specifically to study under Yamada-sensei, who's also known for his firearms expertise. He and Mikiemon, a fourth year student, are both into guns and both look up to the Shousei, who currently works with Torawaka's father's squad.
Since flintlock rifles are no joke weight-wise, he's built a daily muscle training routine into his schedule to handle them properly.
