Benji's father works as part of the Mountain Patrol, where he and his son use Ledian to handle rescue and patrol duties in the mountains. He trains these Ledian with his Pidgeotto, which creates strong winds to prepare them for actual mountain conditions.
When he meets Ash's group, he's friendly but has to leave quickly for an emergency job in a nearby village. Before heading out, he puts Benji in charge and makes it clear he's just a radio call away if things go wrong.
Later, he catches Team Rocket trying to steal Ash's Pikachu and Misty's Togepi. He and Benji work together using both their Ledian to recover the Pokémon and stop the thieves. That night, as the stars come out, Benji's Ledian's spots start glowing—a sign it's gotten stronger from the battle. Impressed, he officially promotes his son to Officer of the Mountain Patrol.
