Asagi was a koto player in Lord Mibu's ensemble at Isozuki's Forest. She contracted a degenerative illness that caused her body to gradually crumble and decay, forcing her to eventually leave the forest. Rather than burden Lord Mibu further, she departed on her own terms, and her devoted umbrella-holder and bodyguard Janome has stayed by her side ever since—literally carrying her in a special gourd to keep what remains of her intact.
The illness hasn't left her helpless, though. Asagi discovered she can possess other people, and doing so temporarily slows the disease's progression. Janome now helps her search for hosts to inhabit, though Asagi herself has mixed feelings about the arrangement. It's a grim existence, but Janome remains committed to keeping her alive.
