Andreas showed up as a one-off character in "Hook, Line, and Stinker" and was competing in Johto's Seaking Catching Competition. He'd made a name for himself winning other fishing tournaments, but his real distinction was his massive ego—especially when it came to putting down Misty and her Poliwhirl. He had this annoying habit of calling her "Red" and constantly trash-talked her Pokémon, insisting his Poliwrath was leagues ahead and would obviously take the competition.
Both he and Misty ended up catching prize-winning Seaking, which meant they had to settle it with a battle. Poliwhirl versus Poliwrath, and despite Andreas's confidence, Misty came out on top. It actually got through to him—after losing, he was impressed enough to apologize for being such a jerk.
