Jin Guangyao took over the Lanling Jin Sect after his father Jin Guangshan's death, eventually becoming the sect's most powerful leader yet—powerful enough to be chosen as the very first Chief Cultivator. He's best known for his incredible memory: he can recall someone's name, title, age, and appearance after meeting them just once, and if he's encountered them more than twice, he'll remember everything about their preferences and habits. This makes him unnervingly good at reading people and giving them exactly what they want. Nie Mingjue, his sworn brother, has called him a rare genius because of this combination of perfect recall and sharp intelligence.
As for his place in the larger world, Jin Guangyao was part of the Venerated Triad and served as the half-brother of Jin Zixuan and uncle to Jin Ling. His sect's dominance during his tenure shaped much of the cultivation world's politics and influence during that era.
