Mo Xuanyu (莫玄羽, Mò Xuányǔ)
Mo Xuanyu is best known for the controversial ritual that kicks off the entire story—he sacrificed his own soul to summon Wei Wuxian from the dead, using the possession as a vehicle for revenge against his own family. He was one of Jin Guangshan's illegitimate sons and trained under the Lanling Jin Sect before things went sideways.
By most accounts, Mo Xuanyu was unstable, described as a lunatic both during his life and even after Wei Wuxian took over his body. Whether that instability came from his mistreatment by the Mo family or was just how he was is left pretty ambiguous—but either way, it drove him to desperate measures. His plan worked, even if it meant erasing himself in the process.
