Kou was a popular kid in middle school and developed a real connection with Futaba—things were heading somewhere until his parents' divorce upended everything. His mom got custody initially, but when it came time to start high school, he moved in with his dad instead for reasons he's never really explained. The kicker? He enrolled at the same high school as Futaba, except now he's going by a different last name, likely his mother's.
For a while he kept up this cold, distant act around Futaba, basically pretending not to care. But over time his actual personality started showing through the cracks. He eventually comes clean about being "Tanaka-kun" from back then, and the nicer side of him becomes harder to hide.
