Youji is a high school student living alone in a modest apartment while attending an elite Christian academy. His parents died in a car accident during his childhood, leaving him and his older sister as orphans with no extended family to turn to.
The accident left him with chronic health problems that plague him throughout the story. He's frequently absent from school because of this, and eventually had to repeat a year—which pretty much guaranteed he'd feel disconnected from his peers. He's naturally introverted and quiet, often struggling with conversation and preferring his own company. His solitary lifestyle suits him fine.
