Nation's name: Magyar Köztársaság (Republic of Hungary)
Capital: Budapest
Language: Hungarian
National flower: Tulip and Pelargonium
Wedding Anniversary: June 8th (Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867)
Hungary wasn't always settled. She spent her early days as a nomadic horse-riding nation roaming the plains, but once she put down roots, she dominated Central Europe for roughly 600 years.
Her most important relationship is with Austria. They weren't always friendly—Hungary used to completely beat him in fights—but as things got tougher for her over time, she realized Austria treated her better than most. The Austro-Hungarian Compromise made it official: they'd have each other's backs in conflicts, and she's stuck by that promise several times over.
Prussia, on the other hand, is her longtime rival. Back when they were younger, Prussia figured Hungary was a boy based on how she acted and talked (and honestly, Hungary believed that too). He bullied her relentlessly for it. That all changed when Prussia found her badly wounded after a run-in with the Ottoman Turks—that's when they both figured out the truth. Since then things have been awkward between them, but Hungary's admitted she'd be devastated if anything happened to him, even though she'll swear she can't stand him.
She's also got bad history with Mongolia and the Ottoman Empire from her younger days.
Despite her introverted nature, Hungary works incredibly hard in the background and makes a loyal friend—though you definitely don't want her as an enemy. On the surface she's elegant and ladylike with an amazing voice, but every so often that rough, foul-mouthed side from her nomadic days comes out. She's got a reputation as the manliest character in the whole series, which surprises people at first glance. Flowers are basically her thing; she wears them in her hair constantly, supposedly representing Lake Balaton. Fair warning: she's a total fujoshi.
Her signature weapon is a frying pan, which she's very fond of using on Prussia specifically. Her most iconic look is a green military uniform with a matching beret, though she's usually drawn in traditional Hungarian costumes when wearing anything else.
Fun fact: Creator Hidekaz Himaruya originally planned for Hungary to be a cross-dressing guy. That role ended up going to Poland instead (who was originally going to be female). Hungary's original design got recycled as the basis for Lithuania's character design.
Side note: Romania and Hungary absolutely cannot stand each other. Hungary names her dogs after famous Romanians just to be petty. In return, Romania's basically built an entire comedy tradition around Hungarian jokes—think "In Soviet Russia" vibes but make it Hungarian.
