Kurt is an empire gunner serving aboard Reinhard's flagship, the Brünhild, and later Kircheis' flagship, the Barbarossa. Compared to his younger counterpart Tonio, he's a seasoned veteran—the kind of guy who's seen enough combat that he doesn't stress too much about the odds. He's got a pretty laid-back attitude about the whole dying-in-war thing, which comes with experience. He lost his left arm at some point but adapted well enough with a prosthetic that it doesn't really slow him down in his work.
