Mule was a survivor from Midland's original forces who got swept up in Griffith's charisma and ended up joining the reformed Band of the Hawk alongside other soldiers from his unit. He's basically Sonia's unofficial guardian—she's even given him a pet name, "The Duck Prince," which he apparently goes along with.
