Melida Angel comes from one of the world's three major aristocratic families—the Paladins—but she's basically the family disappointment. Unlike everyone around her, she has zero natural talent for mana, which in her world is basically like being told you'll never be good enough. People constantly remind her of this, calling her "incompetent" and worse, but she refuses to accept it. She keeps pushing herself to develop mana abilities anyway, grinding through the training that comes so easily to everyone else. It's the kind of underdog setup that defines her whole character—she's driven by spite as much as anything else.
