Hinako Ninomiya works at Furinkan High as a homeroom and English teacher for tenth graders, hired by Principal Kuno to handle the school's troublemakers. On the surface, she seems like a hyperactive elementary school kid—but there's way more going on.
She's actually been dealing with a strange condition since childhood. When she was young and hospitalized, Happosai found her and taught her a chi-draining technique (partly so she'd stop chasing after him when he was stealing from the nurses). The technique lets her drain energy from people, which transforms her into her actual self—a woman in her twenties. Outside of that, she's stuck as a kid, and her personality shifts pretty dramatically depending on which form she's in.
Her crush on Soun Tendo is genuine; he was kind to her during one of her younger phases, and she's never really gotten over it. As for her teaching philosophy, Hinako takes it as her personal mission to straighten Ranma out and improve his behavior. Ranma, predictably, isn't interested in the effort and would much rather coast through school doing the bare minimum.
