Toshiie's an ambitious young samurai just getting his start, hungry to make a name for himself through sheer grit and honor. He's idealistic about the whole thing—convinced that hard work and battlefield valor are all you need to earn real fame. He's got nothing but respect for Katsuie, his mentor, who he affectionately calls "Old Man." They have that classic mentor-student bond, and Toshiie genuinely wants to prove himself worthy of the guy's faith in him.
That said, Toshiie's not your typical ruthless warrior. He was trained to be an obedient weapon, sure, but he's got a soft spot—he doesn't actually enjoy killing, especially not against opponents he respects. When he faces someone honorable in battle, he'll often try talking them into surrendering rather than just cutting them down. It's kind of his thing. This willingness to actually communicate with people, to see the human side of things, is probably why he's become one of Hideyoshi's most trusted and closest vassals.
