Baku is a purple tapir who serves as Kuromi's flying sidekick and closest companion. He's best known for his devotion to her—even though their dynamic is more master-and-pet than equal partnership, despite both being animals. Kuromi doesn't make it easy on him; she's frequently physical with her anger, though it's clear she genuinely cares about him underneath it all. Baku occasionally develops crushes (most notably on Uta in one episode), and he has a conscience that sometimes makes him question their schemes—he's even been shown delivering newspapers and giving rides to kids when he gets the chance.
Like Kuromi, Baku keeps a journal documenting their moments together. Hiiragi destroyed it mid-first season, but he managed to recover it later when they broke out of jail in season two. His name works as a pun: in Japanese, "baku" can refer to either a tapir or a mythological dream-eating creature.
He plays a crucial role in Kuromi's operations. Baku has the ability to sniff out Black Notes, and whenever they acquire one, Kuromi uses a magical stick to skewer it before Baku eats it for safekeeping. The two first met at a beach in Mari Land.
He has a distinctive speech pattern, often ending sentences with "Zona" as a personal catchphrase.
