Sazanami was a blacksmith living a quiet life in a small hut right on the border between two countries. He took on a job to forge a katana and set out to deliver it just before a village festival was about to start. When he got there, he discovered the client's family—three people—had been killed by someone named Gosunkugi. Sazanami tried to fight him off, but Gosunkugi managed to escape. By the time villagers showed up on the scene, all they saw was Sazanami standing over the bodies. They jumped to conclusions and accused him of the murders, forcing him to flee.
