Hachidai worked as a miner in the River Country until things got bad at Katabami Kinzan. When Raiga and Kurosuki's violent takeover of the operation forced him and his coworkers Sangorou and Rokusuke to bail, they didn't make it far—a storm caught them on a mountain and knocked all three into the river below. They washed up downstream in the Fire Country, where Naruto happened to find them and pull them out. Later, when Konoha sent a team to check out what was going down at Katabami Kinzan, Hachidai went back with the others to help.
