"Mélusine isn't my real name. But it's very precious to me."
Mélusine is one of Faerie Britain's Knights of the Round Table—specifically, she's a fairy knight who's taken the name and mantle of Lancelot, the legendary hero from Proper Human History's own Arthurian order. She's the only dragon-type fairy in all of Britain, and her combination of ruthless knightly conduct with striking beauty and elegance makes her the proudest and most beautiful of her kind.
She draws her legend from French folklore, where she was known as Mélisande. The original Mélusine was a tragic figure: a half-human, half-fae beauty cursed to take a serpent's form from the waist down every Saturday, punishment for trapping her father in a mountain cave. According to the old stories, when her lover caught sight of her transformed body, the curse deepened and she became a full serpent.
Personality-wise, Mélusine is introverted but efficient—the type to complete her work quietly and with minimal fuss. She comes across as tense and businesslike, almost fastidious in her approach. When she's in knight mode, she adopts a princely bearing and speaks in a boyish, clipped manner. But let her guard down, and she becomes more feminine and scattered, her self-deprecating humor spilling out. Loneliness is a real issue for her, having spent much of her existence isolated.
Her treatment of humans is where things get interesting. She drives them away without mercy, which has earned her a reputation as a cold, ruthless faerie. But it's not cruelty—she simply categorizes humans as creatures with poor survival instincts. She doesn't hate them or look down on them; she just sees them as fundamentally alien. Given her own complicated origins, she doesn't judge others based on how they were born or what they are.
Mélusine operates from a place of understanding power hierarchies. She's aware she's an apex predator, and she doesn't moralize about strength and weakness—everyone else is weak compared to her anyway. What she actually values is "kindness toward the weak," not courage or ambition. She's generous and even doting with those she likes, wrapping it up in commands like "Obey the strong. Which means obey me."
