England—or Britain, depending on who you ask—is best known as Europe's resident troublemaker. He's got the reputation to back it up: a rough childhood marked by violence, followed by a whole pirate phase before he eventually cleaned himself up and adopted the whole "gentleman" persona. Not that anyone fully buys it.
His beef with France goes back centuries and shows no signs of stopping. They've genuinely done awful things to each other over the years, though these days their constant bickering tends to be over the pettiest stuff imaginable. What's weird is how close they actually are beneath all the sniping—they spend Christmas together, and there's this underlying mutual respect that neither of them will openly admit. France and England are basically best friends in denial.
America's a complicated one. England raised him as a kid and treated him almost like a brother, which makes the whole independence thing even messier. Their relationship tanked after America declared independence and fought against him, and fans often note that England gets genuinely sick and heartbroken every Fourth of July as a result. These days they're constantly at each other's throats, but they obviously still care.
His actual blood siblings—Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, and his youngest brother Sealand—all seem to actively hate his guts, throwing rocks and shooting arrows at him to keep him away. England's not thrilled with any of them, though he does care about Sealand despite finding him annoying.
Personality-wise, he's cynical, stubborn, sarcastic, and pretty cold. Sharp tongue, foul mouth, but not actually a bad guy—fans often describe him as a tsundere. He's surprisingly loyal once you're actually his friend. The supernatural fascinates him; he can do black magic, see ghosts and fairies, and chat with various creatures. Aliens, though? He refuses to believe in those.
His hobbies lean creative and cultural: embroidery, tea, drinking (heavily), literature, rock and punk music. He loves cooking, which is hilarious because he's genuinely terrible at it—his food has zero flavor, which is supposedly why America can stomach his bizarre food preferences. When he gets drunk, he turns bitter and violent, usually ranting about America.
Those thick, bushy eyebrows are his most distinctive feature. Interestingly, all his former colonies that have been portrayed in the series seem to have inherited the same eyebrows—Hong Kong, Australia, and others. During his pirate days, he basically colonized everywhere and made Spain's life miserable doing it.
While he officially represents the entire United Kingdom, he's technically supposed to be England specifically, with his brothers representing Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland separately. The anime adaptation calls him "Britain" at the producers' request, though the creator stated he's just "United Kingdom" to everyone else.
