Satchel is a trainer who showed up in "You're a Star, Larvitar!" He challenged Ash to a battle early on, and Ash jumped at the chance since he was training hard for the Silver Conference. The matchup was fire-on-fire—Satchel's Magby versus Ash's Cyndaquil—and while Cyndaquil gave it everything, Magby came out on top.
Satchel was openly working toward evolving his Magby into Magmar, and he didn't mince words about it: strong as it was, he knew a Magby wouldn't cut it at the Silver Conference. He needed that evolution to be competitive.
He got his wish when Team Rocket showed up and started grabbing trainers' Pokémon left and right. During the chaos, Larvitar helped turn the tide, and Satchel sent Magby out to finish the job. The battle was the push Magby needed—it evolved into Magmar mid-fight and sent Team Rocket flying.
Before they went their separate ways, both Satchel and Ash figured they'd probably face off again at the Silver Conference. That never happened, though, and he's never appeared in the series since.
