Chiyo is the grandmother of Sasori and sister to Ebizo. Once a powerful kunoichi of the Hidden Sand Village, she's long since retired but remains influential in the village's history. She co-founded Sand's puppet division, trained generations of disciples, and developed countless new puppet designs. As if that wasn't enough, she was also a master poison maker—until Tsunade humiliated her during the Great Ninja War by reverse-engineering antidotes to every single one of her toxins. Chiyo's never let it go, still referring to Tsunade dismissively as "that slug woman."
Chiyo's son and his wife were killed by the White Fang of Konoha, Kakashi's father, during the war. That left her grandson Sasori orphaned. She raised him and, seeing his grief, introduced him to puppet jutsu as a way to channel his pain into something constructive. It worked—Sasori became a genius, eventually pioneering the disturbing technique of converting human corpses into puppets. His first creations were his own parents. But Chiyo didn't realize the darkness festering inside him. Twenty years before the main story, Sasori abandoned the village and joined Akatsuki. When they finally faced off during the Rescue of Gaara arc, Chiyo managed to defeat him with Sakura's help.
She ultimately gave her life reviving Gaara using a forbidden reincarnation technique—originally designed to animate puppets, not people. The cost of bringing him back was her own existence.
Chiyo was also the one who sealed the One-Tailed Beast, Shukaku, into Gaara on the Fourth Kazekage's orders.
Notable Techniques:
Her signature jutsu allowed her to resurrect the dead or give life to puppets, though only she could perform it—and only at the price of her own life. She also wielded the Ten Puppets of Monzaemon Chikamatsu, legendary creations left behind by the original founder of shinobi puppet jutsu. These ten work in perfect synchronization and can combine their power to execute devastating techniques.
