Viola was abandoned in the woods as an infant and taken in by Alyssa, who recognized that the girl possessed an unusually high concentration of magic for a human—enough that she couldn't safely control it as a baby. Alyssa became her adoptive mother and primary caregiver.
Despite her mature appearance, Viola is only 16 years old. The age gap often confuses people, and Alyssa frequently gets mistaken for her apprentice rather than her mother, which probably doesn't help matters.
