Cangse Sanren trained under the reclusive cultivator Baoshan Sanren and became known for her exceptional skill—so much so that her reputation stuck around even after she left the mountain. Like everyone who departed Baoshan Sanren's sect, she agreed never to return. Despite having plenty of interested suitors, including the wealthy Jiang Fengmian, she married Wei Changze, a servant. The two died during a night-hunt when their son Wei Wuxian was still young.
From what we know about her through Wei Wuxian and others' accounts, Cangse Sanren was outgoing and mischievous—basically a prototype for her son's personality. Wei Wuxian remembers her as someone who was always laughing. She had a playful streak too: she once shaved off Lan Qiren's goatee, a prank her son would later repeat when he studied at the Cloud Recesses. Beyond the humor, she seemed genuinely selfless.
