Ares is Zeus's son and one of the ruling Olympian Gods. He was worshipped as the god of war across ancient Greece and Rome, with a significant following among warriors and military societies. When Christianity took over the Roman Empire, Zeus decided to let the old worship fade away, cutting off Ares' direct connection to his followers. This left him without much to do, and honestly, he wasn't happy about it.
Over the centuries, Ares grew resentful of Zeus's authority. He's made multiple attempts to take control of Olympus, sometimes teaming up with Pluto (his uncle and god of the underworld) to do it. The friction between him and his father has defined much of his existence since the decline of his worship.
