Ryuubi is the kind of character who seems completely out of place in a fight—a clumsy, bookish girl with glasses who can barely swim and has basically zero combat experience. She's got the makings of a great leader somewhere inside her, but right now she's too timid and easygoing to step into that role. What matters to her most is being there for her friends, especially Chouhi, who's her best friend.
Here's the thing though: she's got one of the most insanely powerful and dangerous dragons in the entire series. Rairyuu is so destructive and corrupt that it actually released chaotic, entropy-warping energy—and when it took over, she nearly killed herself before Ryomou, Chouhi, and Kanu stopped her (though all three ended up critically hurt). The worst part? Ryuubi barely registers that this happened. When her dragon wakes up, especially if she watches her friends get hurt in battle, it triggers these catastrophic outbursts she can barely control.
The anime takes a different approach to her story. Instead of the dragon possessing her three years before everything starts, it happens during the second series when Kanu gets forced to surrender to Sousou. Desperate to save her best friend, Ryuubi gradually learns to harness her dragon's power. She comes to understand that Seito has to actually fight Nanyo and Kyosho to end things once and for all. During that final battle, even though plenty of other toushi came after her, she held her own. When Kanu finally came back, it gave her the push she needed. She almost got strangled out by Sousou before Hakufu showed up—and together they took him down and secured victory for both schools. After that, she was able to go back to her quiet, book-loving life.
