Monoma's main thing is that he's obsessed with beating Class 1-A. As a 1-B student, he's convinced that his class got the short end of the stick compared to 1-A's sudden fame, and he's determined to prove they're better. His Copycat Quirk lets him mimic other people's abilities, which definitely gives him a psychological edge—he loves playing mind games with 1-A.
During the obstacle course, he deliberately placed low (36th) as part of some scheme to mess with 1-A's heads and inflate their egos. Whether it actually worked is debatable, but the point is he'll do questionable stuff if it means getting under their skin. Itsuka Kendo, his classmate, isn't having it though—she's quick to karate chop him on the back of the neck whenever he gets too antagonistic toward 1-A. It's become something of a running thing between them.
