Kyou Kusanagi, known as "The Scion of the Flames," is the heir to the Kusanagi family legacy and carries the weight of destiny—he's meant to fight Orochi. He can summon fire naturally, which gives him a serious edge in combat. He dominated the national tournament circuit and got recruited into KOF, where his team steamrolled the first three competitions. But everything changed in '97. Duty called, and he had to team up with his rival Iori and Chizuru to face down Orochi as their bloodline demanded.
After that mess, Kyou became a target. He went underground in the US for a while, but NESTS eventually tracked him down and did what they do best—harvested his DNA to churn out clones. Eventually he fought his way back to the tournament scene and his friends. Once NESTS fell apart, things briefly looked like they might settle down, until Ash Crimson showed up with one goal: steal the powers of the Three Sacred Treasures, the team of Kyou, Iori, and Chizuru. Two of them lost their abilities. Kyou was the last one standing.
