Kou is a Japanese Catholic priest in his twenties—and yes, he's genuinely devout about it. The interesting thing about him is that he's also legitimately smart when it comes to science, but that's kind of the whole point of what he does. Rather than accepting that science explains everything, he's basically dedicated himself to hunting down miracles that don't fit into any rational framework. It's a pretty specific gig, and he took on the job as a miracle examiner to pursue it seriously.
His partner in all this is Roberto Nicholas, and the two of them work together investigating these cases.
