Satoru Nanpo
Satoru Nanpo is a professional mahjong player from Nagano Prefecture. He's best known among fans as the grandfather and mentor to Kazue Nanpo, whom he's taught to excel at the south wind position in prefectural tournament play.
The character doesn't get much screen time in the manga itself—he's mainly referenced when fellow pro Yasuko Fujita learns the surprising fact that the enigmatic Nanpo actually has a granddaughter. Still, his role as both guardian and skilled coach is central to Kazue's development as a player.
