Hiruko was once a skilled shinobi from Sunagakure, but after his death, Sasori converted him into one of his prized Human Puppets. The puppet served a practical purpose too—Sasori could literally hide inside Hiruko's body, using him as a kind of wearable armor. Sasori dressed the puppet in Akatsuki robes and spent so much time concealed within it that people had come to know Hiruko primarily through those distinctive garments.
When Chiyo encountered the puppet, she remarked on how much Hiruko had changed over the twenty years since she'd last seen him. During a confrontation, Chiyo's skilled puppet manipulation nullified all of Hiruko's attacks, eventually leaving him vulnerable. Haruno Sakura ultimately destroyed the puppet.
