Dendritic cells are basically the immune system's messengers. They grab onto invading bacteria and pieces of infected cells, then present them as antigens to alert the rest of the immune system to the threat. The name comes from their distinctive branching projections—kind of tree-like in appearance.
One of their key jobs is activating naive T cells, essentially turning them into active defenders that can fight off whatever the dendrite cells flagged.
