Kawakami Otojirou is best known as Otoyakko, the most celebrated geisha working in Kagurazaka's entertainment district. By day he runs his own theatrical company with ambitions to make it as a serious actor, though the steady income and fame from his geisha work keeps him plenty busy. He and playwright Izumi Kyouka are close friends—in fact, Kyouka's plays essentially launched Otojirou's acting career in the first place.
He tends to show up in the heroine's life offering practical help: a place to stay, guidance on how to carry herself as a proper geisha, that sort of thing. On the surface he comes across as a bit of a flirt and playboy, but he's actually thoughtful and respectful when it comes to dealing with women, despite the image he projects.
