Rufus Brode masterminded the kidnapping of Katarina Claes. He orchestrated the whole thing using Selena Burke, who was engaged to Ian Stuart at the time, as his puppet. The plan killed two birds with one stone—it let him eliminate both Ian and Gerald while keeping his own hands relatively clean.
