She's dealt with a serious condition—officially called godzilla disease—for over sixteen years now. It causes abnormal growth and disfigurement, which understandably tanked her confidence and left her pretty isolated through most of her childhood and into high school. The physical toll was real, but honestly the emotional weight of it probably hit harder.
