Oshutoru
Oshutoru came from a noble family that was noble in name only—they didn't have much actual status or wealth. His father was a soldier, and Oshutoru wanted to follow in his footsteps. So he left home as a young man and joined up as a regular guard, with the plan to eventually climb the ranks and head back.
But things didn't go according to plan. He actually caught the emperor's eye through his military accomplishments, and instead of a modest promotion, he ended up becoming Royal General of the Right—a huge leap up the ladder that basically locked him into a career in the capital instead of letting him go home.
