Andy practices Shiranui-ryuu Ninjutsu and Koppouken, a form of empty-handed ninja combat he took up after his foster father Jeff was murdered. He trained under Hanzo Shiranui in Japan, driven by a need to get strong enough to kill Geese Howard. Mai Shiranui, Hanzo's granddaughter, grew up alongside him there and has considered herself his fiancée ever since.
When Jeff died, Tung Fu Rue took in both Andy and Terry. But while Terry stayed in South Town, Andy headed to Japan for his training. He didn't see much of Terry during those years, which fed into a rivalry that developed when Andy finally returned. Andy was jealous—Terry was older, taller, more experienced, and somehow better at fighting despite not grinding through the same exhausting daily training regimen that Andy did.
During the King of Fighters tournament that Geese hosted, Andy got a chance to face him one-on-one. It went badly. He nearly died for it until Terry stepped in and saved him. That loss, and Terry ultimately beating Geese, gave Andy the closure he needed. He acknowledged Terry as the stronger fighter and went back to Japan to keep training.
After Geese's death and the rise of Second Southtown, Andy shifted focus. Instead of competing himself, he's been training a student named Hokutomaru in both Shiranui-ryuu Ninjutsu and Koppouken, sending him into tournaments in his place. When Hokutomaru proved himself, Andy wrote him a note saying he was no longer his teacher but his rival—and that they'd meet again as equals.
