Piccolo Daimao is the main antagonist from Dragon Ball, appearing occasionally in Dragon Ball Z flashbacks. He's essentially the evil half of Kami—the two were originally a single being until a powerful Namekian on Earth, seeking to become the planet's guardian, realized the darkness within himself was too strong. He separated it out through intense concentration and training, which created Piccolo Daimao as an independent entity. The split was permanent: if one half dies, so does the other.
About 300 years before the start of Dragon Ball, Piccolo Daimao descended on Earth and basically destroyed it. He spawned an entire army of animal-like Namekian creatures from his own body and turned the world into a nightmare. His name comes from the piccolo flute, and he's famous for giving all his offspring names based on musical instruments—though his kids are mostly named after percussion instruments rather than wind instruments.
There's some mystery around whether Piccolo Daimao actually knew he was a Namekian. He clearly spoke the language and used distinctly Namekian powers and techniques—he even replicated Guru's throne. If he was aware of his origins, it would suggest that Kami's evil streak came specifically from being a Namekian warrior. Interestingly, Mr. Popo later told Bulma that "Piccolo" translates to "different world" in the Namekian language, though whether that was the character's original intent or just a coincidence remains unclear.
