Juugo is the tallest member of Sasuke's team, Snake (later renamed Hawk), and easily the most volatile. He spent years locked up at Orochimaru's North Base—basically ground zero for the guy's creepiest experiments—because he needed to be. Juugo struggles with uncontrollable rage that transforms him into something monstrous, and he knows it's dangerous enough that he willingly stays confined to keep people safe. Karin pegs him as mentally unstable, and she's not wrong; Suigetsu can't stand him and blames him for having to hunt down Zabuza's sword in the first place.
The irony is that despite looking like a killing machine, Juugo actually doesn't want to hurt anyone. When he loses it, he becomes someone else entirely—but he's aware of it and hates it.
Orochimaru was fascinated by Juugo's condition. Juugo originally came to him seeking a cure, but instead, Orochimaru studied the enzymes in his blood that trigger the transformation and used them as the blueprint for cursed seals. The difference is crucial: cursed seals basically lock users into their altered state, but Juugo can control when and how much he transforms. During a brief scuffle with Sasuke and Suigetsu, he morphs his left arm into a piston-like battering ram for raw power, then shifts it into a massive blade. He can even do partial transformations, changing just one part of his body without going full berserk.
Before Sasuke came along, Kimimaro was the only person who could keep Juugo grounded. When Kimimaro died delivering Sasuke to Orochimaru, Juugo saw it as a sign—he believes Kimimaro's spirit lives on in Sasuke, which is why he trusts him to keep his impulses in check.
There's a bracket-shaped mark on Juugo's left palm that hasn't been fully explained. The Akatsuki leader once referred to him as "Juugo of the Scales," though whether that's a title or means something else remains unclear.
