The era of his rule—the Momoyama period—is actually named after his castle. He's remembered for reshaping Japanese society in lasting ways, most notably by restricting the right to bear arms to the samurai class alone.
In Sengoku Basara, he's reimagined as a towering figure with an iron grip on ambition. His drive to unify Japan and forge it into a stable, prosperous nation is genuine, but he's become drunk on power—willing to do whatever it takes, no matter how brutal. This obsession makes him see Nobunaga as pure chaos that needs to be destroyed. Despite his ruthlessness, he maintains genuine loyalty and care for his subordinates, which sets him apart from other warlords in the series.

Sengoku Basara 2 Heroes adds a tragic layer to his character: he wasn't always this way. He and Keiji used to be close friends, both sane and playful, pulling pranks together. But humiliation at the hands of Matsunaga Hisahide planted a seed of hunger for power that festered and corrupted him into the tyrant he became by Sengoku Basara 2.
