Makoto Kurita is the heart of class 5-3—emotionally speaking, he's probably the youngest despite being the same age as everyone else. When the series starts, he's a nervous wreck around anything scary, bolting away and screaming at the first sign of supernatural trouble. Over time, though, Mr. Nube and his classmates help him learn to face what frightens him and grow up a bit.
What makes Makoto stand out is his genuine kindness and upbeat personality. He tries to stay cheerful even when dealing with youkai or other threats, though he remains the most childlike of Nube's students in pretty much every way. He's small for his age and constantly wishes he'd grow taller, and he still loves kid stuff—keeping pets, watching sentai shows. His favorite is Chou Kiken Sentai Kakukaku Ranger (a parody name that roughly translates to "Extremely Dangerous Sentai Nuclear Ranger").
Grade-wise, he's right down there with Hiroshi and Katsuya, but unlike them he actually tries to improve himself. His name and character design both come from Kazuo Umezu's manga Makoto-chan.
