He's a hikikomori who works part-time as a security guard, spending the rest of his time holed up in his room absorbed in manga, anime, and games. His parents' divorce during his childhood hit him hard, pushing him into isolation and depression that never really lifted. Even though his father remarried, he's remained hostile toward his stepmother—cold to her genuine attempts at connection.
He and Misaki cross paths in Quindecim, where they're both forced to compete in an arcade game that determines their fate. It's there he begins to piece together what actually happened: he'd committed suicide by jumping from his apartment building. His last memory before death was his stepmother in the ambulance, crying and desperately pleading with him to hold on as they rushed to the hospital.
