After the Third Great Shinobi War wrapped up, Hinoe was sent by Danzou Shimura to meet with Orochimaru, who was still bitter about being passed over for Hokage. That meeting led to a darker assignment: Hinoe and nine other Root operatives were tasked with assassinating Hiruzen Sarutobi before he could reclaim the Hokage position. Disguised as a foreign ninja, Hinoe ended up fighting one of the Anbu guards protecting the target—who turned out to be Kakashi in disguise.
