Kuromi is basically a dark mirror of My Melody—literally a black rabbit with a joker's hat and a pink skull emblem on her forehead that shifts expression based on her mood. She's best known for being My Melody's bitter rival, though their feud started almost by accident. My Melody once tore a page from Kuromi's journal to wipe a sheep's nose, and Kuromi's been documenting every mishap My Melody's caused her ever since. By the start of the series, she'd written down over 6,300 incidents. My Melody remains completely oblivious to why Kuromi's so mad.
Kuromi carries the Melody Key, a magical artifact with dark powers, and her goal is to collect 100 Black Notes to resurrect the Spirit of Dark Power and destroy her enemies. She's an escaped prisoner from Mari Land, having stolen bread to help feed her friend Baku's struggling family. When she was put on trial, Baku tried to take the blame with her, but she lied to keep him out of trouble. Her one genuine weakness is her tail—stepping on it knocks her unconscious.
She leads a biker gang called Kuromi's 5, made up of Nyanmi (a purple cat), Wanmi (a pale orange dog), Konmi (a white fox), and Chumi (a grey and white rat). They're all decked out in black and cruise around looking appropriately menacing.
Kuromi has a crush on Hiiragi, surprisingly enough—stronger than Uta's, even. She once used the Melody Key to transform into a human called Kurumi Nui so she could dance with him, and he was genuinely into her. But the spell had a Cinderella twist: if she didn't make it back to the spell circle before the candles burned out, she'd turn into a tapir. She had to bail mid-dance, though Hiiragi did kiss her hand goodbye.
Despite her villainous streak, Kuromi has a softer side. On Christmas Eve, she initially rejected a gift from her parents because they never visited her in prison, but a letter explaining they'd actually tried to get in—just weren't allowed—broke through her anger. She accepted the gift, and later helped her friend Uta by combining magic with My Melody and even Santa Claus to summon Uta's deceased mother's spirit.
