M cells, short for microfold cells, are specialized immune cells located in your gut's lymphoid tissue. You'll find them mainly in the Peyer's patches of the small intestine, plus in the tonsils. Basically, they're part of your body's first line of defense against pathogens you ingest—sampling what passes through your digestive tract and alerting your immune system when something sketchy shows up.
