Takeharu Kirijo is Mitsuru's father and runs the Kirijo Group. His own father, Kouetsu, founded the company's darker legacy by starting experiments on Shadows in hopes of weaponizing them—but Takeharu wanted nothing to do with that philosophy. Kouetsu had convinced himself that death was liberation, a belief that shaped the whole disturbing direction of his work. Takeharu rejected all of it.
He doesn't make it far with those principles, though. Shuji Ikutsuki kills him on top of Tartarus, arguing in the process that Takeharu never really grasped what his father was trying to accomplish. It's a brutal end that leaves Mitsuru dealing with the fallout.
