Johnny Joestar, nicknamed "Joe Kid" or "JoJo," was a racing prodigy before his life fell apart. While waiting in line for a play, he let a girl convince him to cut ahead and bribe the bouncers to throw out a kid who'd been waiting all night. That kid shot him in retaliation, leaving Johnny paralyzed from the waist down. After getting sent to the hospital, he was physically abused by staff and completely abandoned—none of his former friends or fellow jockeys bothered to visit.
Everything changed when he met Gyro Zeppeli near the start of Steel Ball Run. When Johnny touched Gyro's steel ball, something clicked. He believed Gyro could teach him to walk again, so he entered the Steel Ball Race to train under him and follow his lead.
For the race, Johnny rides a horse called "Slow Dancer," named after the Boz Scaggs song. The old American Appaloosa is tough to handle at first, but over time becomes Johnny's literal legs in the competition.
