A female shantak—basically a weird cosmic bird with a horse's head and bat wings, pulled straight from the Cthulhu mythos. She's Nyaruko's pet, though she's way more versatile than your typical companion animal. Shantak-kun can shift her size at will, ranging anywhere from dog-sized to towering several stories high. She can also transform into different vehicles when needed, making her pretty handy for getting around.
One running joke is that shantak eggs are apparently fancy delicacies out in space—expensive stuff that aliens value, according to Nyaruko at least. Mahiro, though, constantly refuses to eat them no matter how much Nyaruko pushes. In fact, Nyaruko originally arrived on Earth by riding in a spaceship that was secretly Shantak-kun in disguise.
