Yury was a treasure hunter back in the day, running around with Precht and Warrod before any of them were famous. He's best known as one of Fairy Tail's founding members and for being Makarov's father. He and Mavis were close—genuinely good friends, not just guild acquaintances—which made sense given how early he was involved with the whole operation.
