Alfonso San Valiante is the crown prince of Valiante. On his twentieth birthday, his mother Queen Esmeralda gives him a golden pendant she's carried her whole life—a family heirloom featuring the symbol of Garo, a red triangular gem set in a golden circle.
He wasn't always the capable swordsman he's known as today. Alfonso was actually a sickly, fragile kid, the kind who probably shouldn't have turned into such a formidable fighter. But he did. These days he's strong and healthy, though he's kept something from those harder days: a genuinely down-to-earth nature that comes across in how he treats everyone around him, regardless of status.
When the royal adviser Mendoza orchestrates a coup and seizes the throne, Alfonso manages to slip away before he can be captured. Rather than hide, he goes on the run with a specific goal: finding the Knight of Light to undo what's been done. His determination to protect his kingdom and people drives everything he does—he's willing to go to serious lengths for them.
During his travels, he meets Rafael Banderas, better known as Gaia the Knight of Defense, who becomes his mentor and teaches him the ways of the Makai Knights. That partnership becomes central to what Alfonso is able to accomplish next.
