Black is a young man obsessed with becoming Champion of the Unova Pokémon League—a dream he's had for nine solid years. The problem is, it's basically all he can think about. His dreams get so intrusive that he physically exhausts himself mentally, which is where his Munna comes in handy. When the Pokémon eats his dreams, Black describes the sensation as his mind shifting from "blank white" to "solid black," letting him think clearly, process information faster, and perceive things better. Weirdly, when this happens, he sees the world in hexagons. Without the dream-eating trick, Black tends to act on impulse without considering consequences or how his actions affect the people around him—though he does gradually learn empathy as the series goes on.
Characters often call him "hot blooded" because of his loud personality and his tendency to charge ahead without input from others. He doesn't really get show business the way White does, which leads to some culture shock moments (like being confused why Gigi and Tep get hotel rooms while he and White have to camp). On the flip side, Black spent a lot of time in libraries growing up, which made him incredibly fast at solving Lenora's Gym puzzle—he set a new record doing it. His dream obsession isn't all bad for his smarts, but it does make him spacey about everything else. Case in point: he completely forgot a promise to his friends Cheren and Bianca the moment he got his hands on that package containing their Pokémon and Pokédexes.
